A MEDICAL EDUCATIONAL PIPELINE FROM PRIMARY TO QUINTENARY LEVELS
Educational research has shown that children from historically underrepresented ethnic groups and in predominantly rural areas have begun to fall behind their peers by the fourth grade. Many never catch up and leave school prematurely, exacerbating an already dire lack of health care professionals in the very sectors of society most in need. ICSM is pioneering innovative evolutionary-narrative learning programs starting in primary and secondary schools that engage students in STEM subjects. Tertiary educational programs engage college students in MCAT exam preparation through integrating their premedical science subjects with real medical cases. Medical students are served at the quaternary level through USMLE exam preparation courses integrating the medical basic sciences with inquiry-based learning tied to clinical applications. Quintenary programs serve practicing physicians with Continuing Medical Education credits, particularly in advanced anatomical practical reviews.
Virtual Museum of Evolving Health
The Virtual Museum of Evolving Health is an initiative of the Center for Evolutionary Medicine at the Integrative Centers for Science and Medicine, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the Dhody Research Institute. The Virtual Museum draws from the vast store of objects and collections in natural history and medical museums worldwide and places them in the context of human health - what "health" means, how it is tied to the ancient origins of our bodies, and what is means for you in today's world.
